4. Rashid Nezhmetdinov (1912 - 1974)

Many of the chess players in today's world won't even know the name. The reason is he wasn't even a grand master (all other players in our list were world champions), but don't get fooled by just that. Its only because this crazy genius didn't do anthing but attack and that doesn't win a lot of games for you. The Tatar Nezhmetdinov was not among the very best players in the world. In fact, he was only an International Master. But in tactical complications, he could compete with the best of them. Mikhail Tal, who was one of his fans, lost three of the four games they played, at the height of his career. If you don't think Rashid deserves to be in this list, go and check out a book on the the best chess brilliancies and you will know.

3. Paul Morphy (1837-1884)

Regarded by many as the most creative attacker of all time, Paul Morphy was a genius on the board. Watching his games in 2020 will give you goosebumps as if you are actually travelling in time. Morphy had beaten all the major chess players of europe and America before he was even 21 years old!! Many of the attacking players over time have called Morphy as an inspiration for their style of play, including our no.1 Mikhail Tal. Unfortunately, Morphy died before the first official chess championship was conducted. But it wouldn't have actually mattered as thi eccentric genius retired from professional chess just at the age of 22 years to persue a career as a lawyer.  "The ability to play  chess  is the sign of a gentleman. The ability to play  chess well  is the sign of a wasted life." Paul Morphy

2.GARRY KASPAROV (1963 - )

This name surely doesn't need an introduction in the world of chess. Regarded by the majority of the critics as " The greatest of all time " was also a distinct attacking player, and remained so until the day he retired. Kasparov’s philosophy was that if you position enough pieces near the opponent’s king, the game will eventually end in a checkmate as long as you find the right combinations. And no one was better at finding the right combinations than Kasparov. He was the king of chess for 20 years. The classical world champion for the first 15 of them and the world number one for the full 20. He’s one of the greatest attacking player of all time, and it seems unlikely that anyone can challenge his spot as the best attacking player of all time(except for Mikhail Tal, Ofcourse)

1. Mikhail Tal(1936-1992)

YOU CAN'T START THIS LIST WITHOUT THIS NAME. When thinking of attacking players, there is one name that first comes to mind for most of us, and that is 'The Magician From Riga' Mikhail Tal. The Magician from Riga had a short reign as world champion(won only one championship-1960) and was plagued by poor health, but his play is synonymous with brilliant attacking play and a sacrificial style. That has made him into one of the greatest fan favorites in the history of chess. Not undeservedly so, as Tal was an amazing player in every regard. During his peak years of 1958 - 1961, no one in the world could touch him. “You must take your opponent into a deep dark  forest  where 2+2=5, and the path leading out is only wide enough for one.” MIKHAIL TAL
